Abundant of joy at the Jordan River Village
"Long time no see, our children are so happy, feeling free and in a wonderful atmosphere. We left with full hearts from an unforgettable experience," recounts a mother with a son diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, after an event at 'Kfar Nahariya' - part of a global network of villages established by the late actor Paul Newman for children with special needs. This is the third consecutive year that the 'Little Steps' association, which supports families of Duchenne-Beker patients, is hosting family vacations at the village. The meeting between children facing a serious illness in a rural and well-kept environment led to many touching moments. Two social workers from the association (Michal and Sharon) held separate discussion circles during the vacation days for fathers of children, mothers, siblings, and the children themselves. "It's good to know that we are not alone in this journey of the illness," was a message that recurred in the sincere, painful, and exposed discussion circles, where fears, difficulties, experiences, and challenges were shared. The special atmosphere contributed to strengthening the sense of 'togetherness' within the community. Yinon Nizar, the vacation manager at Kfar Nahariya: "We constantly receive children with special needs from various frameworks, and we tailor the activity programs based on the characteristics of the illness. Hosting families of Duchenne-Beker children deeply touched us, and it was different. We provided experiences of success and enjoyment. We heard a lot of laughter, there were peak moments at the village, and at the end of the vacation, the farewell was not easy for any of us. The families really struggled to say goodbye and leave."
