The Cameri Theatre Presents Tribute Performances to Naomi Shemer, Israel Prize Laureate
Naomi Shemer (July 13, 1930 – June 26, 2004) was an Israeli poet, musician, translator, composer, and songwriter. She was the recipient of the Israel Prize for Hebrew Song in 1983. Shemer wrote numerous songs, many of which became cultural milestones in Israeli heritage, such as "Jerusalem of Gold," "The Eucalyptus Grove," "Lu Yehi" (Let It Be), "Al Kol Eleh" (For All These), "Shlomit Builds a Sukkah," and "The Song of the Grass." Shemer is considered by many to be the "national poet."
The Cameri Theatre will hold four special tribute performances for Naomi Shemer, Israel Prize laureate for Hebrew Song. Naomi Shemer—poet, songwriter, composer, translator, and performer—wrote "a thousand songs and one," and never wrote for the drawer because she always wanted her songs to be performed in "communal singing" (a term she coined). As she wrote in one of her early songs, "Woe to the song, woe to the song if it has no, has no echo."
The performance will feature songs written and composed by Naomi Shemer, poems by other poets she chose to set to music, and songs she translated: Lu Yehi, Al Kol Eleh, Jerusalem of Gold, To Sing is Like Being the Jordan, The Love of the Construction Workers, A Night on Achziv Beach, The Song of the Grass, I Don't Have a Dull Moment, Love at 20, The City in Grey, I Am a Guitar, Noa, and more...
