The Israeli Opera, in a joint production with the Polish National Opera, presents the opera by Benjamin Britten, directed by Mariusz Treliński and conducted by Maestro Alexander Joel. So, who determines who is to blame?

Is Peter Grimes a cruel and dangerous man, or a victim of a society seeking a scapegoat? "Peter Grimes" is a high-tension psychological drama about loneliness, fear, and social exclusion. The work reveals how rumors gain the validity of facts and how fear and suspicion can seal a person's fate. This is the core of Benjamin Britten's masterpiece about a man struggling against a society that turned its back on him.

The Israeli Opera presents Benjamin Britten's masterpiece - the opera "Peter Grimes" - whose success at its London premiere in 1945 marked a turning point in the history of British opera and established Britten's status as one of the most important opera composers of the 20th century.

This joint production between the Israeli Opera and the Polish National Opera, directed by Mariusz Treliński, first premiered in Warsaw in 2023 and received critical and audience acclaim. The production in Israel will be conducted by Maestro Alexander Joel.

The Plot: Takes place in a small fishing village on the coast of England. Grimes, a lonely and stubborn fisherman, is suspected of being responsible for the death of his young apprentice. The investigation determines that it was an accidental death, but the townspeople continue to view him as guilty. When another disaster occurs, suspicions intensify and the locals unite against him, leading to a tragic end.

Mariusz Treliński: One of the prominent directors on the international opera scene, he is known to the Israeli Opera audience for his acclaimed production of "Madama Butterfly," which first premiered in Israel in 2008. Treliński, who began his career as a film director, developed a rich and powerful stage language that combines psychological drama with stage imagery and video projections. In his production of "Peter Grimes," the fishing village, the piers, and the sea become an integral part of the hero's inner mental world, intensifying the sense of loneliness and threat that accompanies him.

In the Director's Words: "'Peter Grimes' is one of the few works where I felt there was no need to struggle with the original material or artificially update it. The work contains everything required for great drama: psychological depth, moral complexity, a mysterious story, and rich, meaningful music."

The Production: In this production, Treliński collaborates with set designer Boris Kudlička, his artistic partner for nearly a quarter of a century, with whom he also created "Madama Butterfly" at the Israeli Opera. The stage design, featuring a black fishing boat, piers, and large video projections of sea waves, creates a dark and threatening atmosphere. According to Treliński, he found in the work all the components of a great drama: psychological depth, moral complexity, a mysterious story, and rich, meaningful music. At the center of his interpretation stands the figure of 'the other,' the person whom society marks as abnormal and threatening.

The Libretto: Of "Peter Grimes," written by Montagu Slater, is based on the poem *The Borough* by the English poet George Crabbe. While in the literary source Grimes is described as a cruel man, in the opera his character becomes complex and evokes compassion, giving the story new psychological and moral depth.

Benjamin Britten: Britten, who grew up on the shores of Suffolk in eastern England, was intimately familiar with the seascapes and the lives of fishing communities. In "Peter Grimes," he gave the sea an extraordinary musical expression, notably in the six famous orchestral interludes. The music describes the sea in its many forms, from morning tranquility to the threatening storm, giving the coastal landscape a dramatic presence throughout the work.

The Chorus: The chorus plays a central dramatic role: it gives a voice to the townspeople and expresses the transition from personal suspicion to collective persecution.

The Singers: Tenor Peter Wedd, who will play the title role alternately with Julian Hubbard, performed the role of Grimes in the Warsaw premiere and returned to it for subsequent performances. His performance was praised for its vocal power, the depth of interpretation he brought to the character, and his ability to express emotional complexity through singing and acting. Alongside them are soloists from Israel and abroad, including sopranos Alla Vasilevitsky and Shaked Stroul in the role of Ellen Orford, baritone Eric Greene as Captain Balstrode, tenor Anthony Webb as Bob Boles, baritone Oded Reich as Ned Keene, Rona Shrira and Yarden Kiperman as Auntie, Veronica Brook and Rania Atiq as the First Niece, Efrat Bram Ha-Cohen and Tom Cohen as the Second Niece, Anat Czarny and Tamara Navot as Mrs. Sedley.

Maestro Alexander Joel: Will lead the Israeli Opera Orchestra, the Israel Rishon LeZion Symphony Orchestra. The Israeli Opera Chorus, conducted by Itay Berkovich, also participates in the production.
